He formerly worked at Model Furniture Store, and worked in maintenance at Stevens Clinic Hospital in Welch. He was a member of the Mountain Top Baptist Church in Premier.
"In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Savannah Mills Mitchem; two infant daughters, Drema Darlene Mitchem and Dianne Lynn Mitchem; and five sisters and eight brothers. He was the last surviving member of his original family.
