"A McDowell woman shot and killedher 16-year old son as he lay in bed Monday morning then
turned th gun on herself according to Dr. J.A. Bennett, McDowell County coroner.
"The bodie of Ida E. Horton, 52, of Switchback and her son ,Leon, were found in the boy's bedroom
Monday afternoon about 4:30 by the father, JohnL. Horton, when he returned home from work.
"Constable Wint McNeil of Bramwell said the boy was lying on the bed, apparently asleep when he was
shot behind the right ear.
"The mother was lying on her right side in front of the bed with a bullet wound in her right temple.
She still had the .38 special clinched in her right hand.
"Constable McNeil said the father an employee of Appalachain Electric Power Company could offer
no...(can't read)...Mrs. Horton had not been well for some years.
"He said that Horton told him the family visitedrelatives Sundayand Mrs. Horton didn't talk much. He
said his wife rested well Sunday night and fixed his breakfast Mondaymorning and got him off to work.
"The Hotons live in an AEP Comany house at Switchback and have two sons and a daughter older
than Leon. One of the sons in in the army while the other works in an aircraft plant in Maryland. The
girl is a nurse at a Bluefild hospital."

Ethel Mildred Pruitt, 38 in a room rented by Mrs. Goad at English, Saturday afternoon.
"Goad was orgnally from Dugspur in Carroll county, Va. His wife's relatives were from Tucson, Arizona.
The other woman, in this domestic mix-up had been sharing the rented room with Mrs. Goad since
leaving her husband, Noland Pruitt of Garland, a few weeks earlier.
"The final part of the tragic domestic triangle was enacted in a six room house occupied by Jess Brown.
Mrs. Goad rented one room of this house from Brown. Goad resided at the home of Bill Thompson in
English..."

"A few minutes later, Brown was atartled by a fusillade of shots. He ran immediately to Deskins store nearby and told Al and Bill Deskins of the shots and said that he had heard someone groaning in Mrs.
Goad's room after the shooting.
"The Deskins brothers wnet with Brown to the room and looked in. He said it was a shambles.
"Mrs. Pruitt's body, clothed in blue jeans and shirt, was lying in a pool of blood at the foot of the bed. Mrs. Goad's body was lying shot to death about 10feet away from the bed.She was clothed in brown slacks and a white blouse.
"Goad was lying across the bed, still wearing his overcoat. By his hand was the luger automatic pistol which apparently had been unloaded into the women and then used to put a fatal bullet into his own heart.
"Mrs. Pruitt had her hand in the pocket of her jeans and clutched in her right hand was a .38 automatic pistol whic had never been fired.
"The fatal shots were fired a few minutes after 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon.
"Authorities reported that Goad had told neighbors before Christmas that he was going to shoot his wife, the woman fried who was "breaking up his home" and himself.
"Mrs Pruitt was a taxi driver. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joe Atwell of the Dry Fork section.
"Survivors include the husband, one son; two brothers, both of Parkersburg; two sister, Mrs. Agnes
Knicely of Parkersburg and Mrs. Cora Short of Bradshaw.
"Funeral Services fro Mrs. Pruitt was conducted from the Baptist chuch at Shortridge near Garland yeaterday afternoon with the Rev.N.K. Smith of Jolo, officating. Burial followed in the Shortridge Cemetery.
"Mr. Goads body was sent toGalax, VA where last rites will be conducted and burial made in the family cemetery there.
