"I am looking for any information on the death of my great grandfather, James “Austin” Gray. He and my great grandmother, Eliza Jane Franklin Gray and their children moved to WV sometime between 1905 and 1910. Her parents lived in Big Sandy and I believe Austin and Liza Jane may have also lived in this area for a time and ultimately in Welch. Oral family history says Austin died following a gunshot wound. He was shot and made it home (the wound was not mortal) and collapsed at the front gate. This incident occurred during the winter months and his death was supposedly due to exposure. I have established a timeline based on birth date of the youngest child. The youngest child, Frank Gray, was born on Oct 1, 1915 (sic, Roy James Gray was born earlier in 1902) and is described in the family story as being “a babe in arms” when Austin died. This suggest Austin could have died between Oct 1915 and March 1916. As was common in the time, “Liza Jane”, having eight children between the ages of 15 and a few months of age, and limited means of supporting them, placed the children with friends and neighbors. Liza Jane remarried in 1919 or 1920 to Allen Sanders and lived in Browns Creek. Following her marriage to Sanders, she was able to gather all her children except the youngest, Frank. If anyone has any information regarding Austin Gray’s death or where he is buried , I would appreciate your help."
