He served as a two-term member of the West Virginia House of Delegates, eight-year member, and President of the McDowell County Commission, and served 20 years as a county Magistrate. Among his numerous accomplishments for McDowell County, he led the completion of many projects to include a county park system and many county road improvements. He also led the construction of the McDowell County Jail and the acquisition of a new fleet of cruisers for the McDowell County Sheriff's Department. During his tenure in the House of Delegates, he was most proud of assisting numerous coal miners in obtaining their Black lung benefits. The people's welfare of McDowell County was always his first priority. To date, he is the only person to serve in all three branches of McDowell County government: Legislative, judicial and executive.
"He loved helping people and was involved in numerous civic activities throughout his life. He was a Boy Scout Master for Troop 180 in Roderfield, and attained the elite status of Eagle Scout. In his late teens and early twenties he led a dance band, The Stardusters, playing in local county clubs. He also served as a charter member of the Roderfield Volunteer Fire Department, past Chairman of the McDowell County Democratic Party, and past president of the Welch High School Maroon Wave Booster Club. Ronnie also served as host of the locally popular radio show on radio WELC as "Ronnie Predicts" – he entertained many local high school and college football enthusiasts with his predictions of games and often controversial commentary. He was especially proud of his 13-year stint as an evangelist appearing in many local church and on local radio and cable TV stations bringing the word of God to many throughout southern West Virginia.
"Ronnie was also the owner and operator of McKenzie's Discount Store in Roderfield. Founded by his father and mother, Blume and Ruth in 1941 McKenzie's flourished parallel to the coal mining boom in the 1960's and 70's. Again, Ronnie and Blume always prided themselves in providing first-rate services and products to their customers and continued to do so until the store closed in 1984. One of Ronnie's greatest treasurers in life was being afforded the opportunity to work directly with his father in building McKenzie's into one of the region's most successful businesses. A common theme by now, Ronnie simply loved being a servant to his customers.
"As for his other interests, He truly loved the West Virginia University (WVU) Mountaineer Football Program and always looked for forward with great anticipation and pride to every fall Saturday when he and his family would gather to enthusiastically support their beloved, and nationally-renown ‘Eers. With nearly equal love, he fervently supported his favorite NASCAR driver, Matt Kenseth during his weekend races.
"Ronnie especially wanted to pay tribute to his dearly beloved grandmother, Nancy U. Lauderback, for he loved and respected her immensely and felt forever indebted for her Christian guidance and unconditional love during the early formative years of his life. He was also grateful to his dog, Mason, for his companionship and comfort during his last years.
