"The death tonight of an 18-months-old baby left only the mother alive of a family of six, victims of a fire which destroyed their home at Asco, near here, Friday.
"Clarence Bennet, 36, his two sons, Charles, 4, and Junior, 6, were burned to death as they slept and Mrs. Bennet, Lillian, 7, and the baby daughter were severely burned.
"Lillian died in a Welch hospital today and the infant daughter succumbed a few hours later. Physicians said they held little hope for the mother.
"After an investigation, officials today expressed the opinion that the fire had been caused by an overheated stove. Bennett, a night workman, had returned home early yesterday, lighted a fire in the stove and fell asleep on the floor beside it.
"When the fire was discovered by neighbors, the house was beyond saving, and Mrs. Bennett and two children, Lillian, and Louise, a two-year-old-baby girl, were dragged from the house in a nearer dead than alive condition. They were rushed to Welch and placed in Grace hospital, where little hope was held out for any of them.
"Funeral arrangements for the victims had not been completed at a late hour yesterday, R.C. Brockman general manager of the Atlantic Smokeless Coal company, of Asco, on whose property the fire occured, drove to North Carolina to bring Mr. Bennett's mother to Asco, and not until she arrives will definte funeral arrangements be made.
"Mrs. Bennet suffered what is termed "third degree" burns, and from which there is no hope of recovery. Her condition has been considered hopeless since she was admitted to the hospital."
