"WELCH — Robert A. "Bob" Fanning, age 79, of Welch, W.Va., passed away Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at Welch Community Hospital. He was the son of the late James P. and Gertrude Neal Fanning of Iaeger. "Bob was President of Fanning Funeral Home, Inc. He was born May 21, 1931 in Vulcan, W.Va. He graduated from Iaeger High School in 1948. He attended National Business College in Roanoke, Va. for two years. "June 1952, he was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was overseas fourteen months with the medical corp, one hundred seventy sixth field artillery battalion. "May 28, 1955, he married Betty Jean Young of Welch; they were to celebrate 55 years of marriage on May 28, 2010. "August 1955, he graduated Cum Laude from Cincinnati College of Embalming. He was President of Pi Sigma Eta and received his degree in mortuary arts and science. "January 1956, he was licensed by the state as funeral director and embalmer and became manager of Fanning Funeral Home in Welch. "Bob was a member of the Key Club and was Chairman of the McDowell Heart Fund and The March of Dimes in 1957. He was a former member of the Advisor Council of the West Virginia Department of Employment Security and the Chamber of Commerce. He was a Past Vice President of the Welch Jaycees, and was a former member of Iaeger Lodge 148 A.F. & A.M. "Bob was member of the American Legion Post 8, the 40&8, the Masons McDowell Lodge 112, the Welch Shrine Club, all of Welch, and the Mighty Welch Lions Club, having been President in 1965. Bob also started the Mr. Valentines Pageant at the Welch Lions 17 years ago, which became an annual affair. He was voted Mr. Valentine in 2000. Being a member of the Lions Club for over 50 years, Bob has been presented many awards; two special ones were the Melvin Jones Fellow Award and the Leonard Jarrett Award by Lions International. He also has a few golf trophies from Lions Club Golf Tournaments. "Bob was a comedian at times, he emceed many functions. He loved people and he dearly loved his family and he was a true WVU Fan. Bob was a member of the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors for the MCNB Bank of Welch. "Bob was an active member of The First Presbyterian Church in Welch, where he has served as a deacon and elder, and was a former President of the Men's Club of the church. "He was preceded in death by in addition to his parents; one sister, Juanita Fanning Smith; one brother, James Randolph "Ranny" Fanning; a nephew, Mark Fanning and wife Crystal; and his stepmother, Carolyn Stacy Fanning. "Survivors include his wife of 55 years Betty Jean Young Fanning; one son, Robert Patton Fanning and wife Mary Cornelia of Morgantown, W.Va.; one daughter, Patricia Fanning Renko and husband Fred R. Renko of Welch; and his special Pug Dog "Baby." "Other survivors include two sisters, Shirley M. Lambert of Roderfield and Judith Fanning Bailey of Antioch, Calif.; two brothers, Senator John Pat Fanning and wife Kathryn and Thomas W. Fanning and wife Ruby, all of Iaeger; and caretaker Bonnie Lester of Hemphill. He has five surviving grandchildren who he was so proud of and loved very much. "Betty Jean Fanning, of Welch, WV, died Wednesday, October 16, 2019. She was 87 years old. Born October 7, 1932 in Hemphill, WV, she was the daughter of the late Mason H. and Helen Lineberry Young. She was a graduate of the Class of 1950, Welch High School, where she was a cheerleader in her Senior High Years, was elected May Queen in 1950, and was voted most popular in her graduating class. She was employed by G.C. Murphy, Co. in Welch during her school years. Upon graduation from High School, she was employed as clerk-typist for U.S. Steel at Munson, WV (Gary 14) for nine months, wrote Society News for Munson in 1950 and 1951 for Welch Daily News, and was a cashier for the telephone company in Welch. She completed three years of Nursing School at Pulaski Hospital School of Nursing, in Pulaski, VA. Upon graduation from Nursing School in September 1954, she was employed by Stevens Clinical Hospital in Welch, WV, became a Registered Nurse in December 1954, and retired from there after several years.Betty Jean married the “Love of her Life”, Robert A. “Bob” Fanning on May 28, 1955, and would have been married 55 years, three days after his death on May 25, 2010. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Welch, where she served as an Elder and Missions Chairperson, and served on the Memorial Committee. She also was a member of Presbyterian women (being a past President) and was a member of the Church Choir. She loved her Church and Church Family.Betty Jean loved people and helped anyone she could. She gave to and worked for many charitable causes, including Heart, Cancer, Lung, Alzheimer’s, and Arthritis. She was a member of the Legion Auxiliary in Welch, Bramwell Chapter No. 158, Order of Eastern Star, Life Member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and named a Donor of the Year in 2012 by Hospitalized Veterans.She loved her family dearly, and her pet “Pug” dog which was a gift from her to her husband Bob in 2009, named “Baby”. "Shirley M. Fanning Lambert, age 85, of Iaeger-Roderfield Road, passed away Thursday, November 21, 2013 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center. Born March 2, 1928 in Vulcan, West Virginia. She was the daughter of the late J.P. and Gertrude E. Neal Fanning.
Shirley was the second born of seven children: Juanita, Shirley, Ranny, Bob, John Pat, Judy and Tom. She was a graduate of Iaeger High School, Class of 1946 being very active in keeping the Class Reunions together. She was a staunch supporter of Iaeger High School. A member of the Iaeger United Methodist Church, was serving on the Board of Trustees and Chairperson of the Margaret Harmon Circle. Also, Shirley was the first and only female Mayor of Iaeger and served on the Board of Directors for Commission on Aging. She was the former owner of Shirl’s Flowers & Gifts in Iaeger.
Immediate survivors include: one daughter: Frances (Dee Dee) and husband, Howard Bivens of Iaeger-Roderfield Road; one son: Jim and wife, Terri Sly of Welch. Two granddaughters: Amy L. Bivens and husband Mark Melin of San Bruno, CA and Myra Sly of Salem, VA.
Funeral Services will be conducted Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. from the Fanning Funeral Home Chapel in Welch with the Reverend Don Morgan officiating. Burial will follow at Iaeger Memorial Cemetery, Roderfield WV..."
