"Thomas Laxton, Sr., of Ashe County, North Carolina, married Jane Pasley, daughter of Samuel and
Nancy Pasley, of Ashe County. Samuel was a wheelwright and wagon builder. Thomas was a school teacher, shoemaker, and farmer, In 1854 Thomas entered land aggregating 1, 071 acres, located on Jim's Ridge and Rockcastle Creek, Wyoming County. However Thomas' affairs did not prosper as he anticipated. The Civil War disrupted everything, his health declined, and he died, date not known. in 1864 Jane married Mitchell Cook, a Methodist preacher and prominent citizen of his day. Both lived to be very old.
"Considerable confusion and errors exist as to children of Thomas and those of his brother, George Laxton. The marriage records of Wyoming County disclose certain facts which eliminate some of those errors, as follows:
"Marriage Record 1, page 11, "Wilbrin (Wilburn) Laxton, 20, born in Ashe Co., N.C., son of Thomas and Jane, married Julian Stewart, 20, born in Logan County, Va., daughter of Robert and Martha Stewart, on Jan, 11, 1862. Rev, Lane Shannon." Wilburn was a farmer, teacher, and Union Home Guard. Exposure incident to his service ruined his health, resulting in his death in 1871. The widowed Julian, age 32, married John W. Gunnoe, a widower and Confederate veteran, on April 17, 1874. Their only child was Margaret, who married "Son" Hill. Children of the first marriage:
1. Minerva Jane Laxton, at the age of 16 married Joseph F. (Bub) Hill in 1881; (2) Ballard Preston Cook; (3) James Cook. Children of the first marriage were Elbert I. Hill, Baptist minister; Dennie Hill, Myrtle Hill, and Grace Hill. Of the second marriage were Clair L. Cook and Virgil A. Cook. Of the third marriage, Leola Cook, James Cook, sheriff of Wyoming County, died in 1918. Minerva lived to be 92 years old.
2. Mary Anneta Laxton married Mitchell Harrison Cook. Their children were: Josephine married Fred Cooper; Eliza, married Murl Shupe; Nile, married Dr. R.R. Pharr; Vada, married Jesse Jackson; Nyanza, married Ellis Hughes; Odell, married Kathleen Dew; Hershell, married Hattie McGraw; and Harry, married Thelma Faulkner.
3. Vernila F. Laxton married (1) Fields Emmet Laxton, son of George Laxton; (2) Dr. A.E. Meyers; (3) Elihu Green. Her only child was Romeo Laxton. She also lived to be very old.
4. Nancy Lucretia Laxton married Dr. U.G. Cook (2nd wife). He was a Baptist minister and practicing M.D. at Beckley. Their three children were Winnie Cook Freeman, Violet Cook, unmarried, and J. Alvan Cook, Baptist minister.
"Marriage Record 1, page 17: "Hezekiah Laxton, 19, born Ashe Co, N.C., son of Thomas and Jane Laxton, married Martha Jane Cook, 18, born in Wyoming County, daughter of R.M. and Mary Cook, on August 13 1868." Hezekiah was a farmer and teacher. After his death in 1971, Martha married Joseph Belcher, widower, a farmer and shoemaker, and they lived at Rockview. Children of Hezekiah and Martha were Thomas, George Bernard, called "Bee," Rufus, and Burell, all of whom died young, except "Bee," who lived to be past 80 and enjoyed robust health all his life, He was a farmer, carpenter, and cabinet maker. TB almost wiped out this family. Bee often remarked that he lived more than seventy years on "borrowed time."
