"GARY — Dora “Lil” Lillian Carson, age 84, of McDowell Nursing and Rehab Center, Gary, formerly of Elkhorn, went to be with the Lord Friday night, February 15, 2008 at the nursing center after a short illness. "Born November 17, 1923 in Upland, she was the daughter of the late James Malcolm Stoots and Bessie Mae Burnette Stoots. She was employed by Elkhorn Public Service, First National Bank of Keystone, and most recently Ameribank in Northfork, retiring at the age of 76. She was also employed at a bomb making factory in Elkton, Md., during World War II. She was a lady of great talents, teaching herself to drive by sneaking the family car out during the day and returning it to the same spot before Roy got home from work. She also taught herself to play golf and when no one else would play with her, her elderly neighbor, Kelly Dixon, would accompany her. She eventually became a good enough player that she won a ladies championship at Gary Country Club. With her competitive golfing days behind her, she turned her attention to teaching her grandsons the game she loved. A legacy that will surely live on in them. She was a long time member of the Elkhorn United Methodist Church, Elkhorn, where she was active in the guild. She was also a home room mother at Elkhorn Grade School and active with the band and athletic boosters at the Junior and High School levels at Northfork. She was a resident of Elkhorn most of her life, and had been a resident of the McDowell Nursing and Rehab Center, Gary, for the past 4 1/2 years, where she made many friends with the residents and workers. "Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Glenn Carson; one son, Roy Glenn Carson, Jr.; three sisters, Mae Stoots Hardy, Frances Stoots Brinkman, and Willie Stoots Hash; three brothers, James Stoots, Johnny Stoots, and Frankie Stoots; one grandson, Christopher French; and a special friend, Shirley Barton. "She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Linda Meredith and husband Robert of Bluefield, Carolyn Kennedy and Ted of Raysal, Glenna Farmer and husband Jerry of Thorpe; one sister, Julia Ann Stoots Allen of Aberdeen, N.C.; a special sister-in-law, Pat Stoots of Aberdeen, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Tina Meredith Pittman of McLeansville, N.C., Robert G. Meredith of Kennesaw, Ga., David N. Meredith of Christiansburg, Va., Michael C. Meredith of Bluefield, Va., J. Leanne Hollyfield of Springville, Va., Jerry L. Farmer of Gary, Stephen D.
