[* Musick / Houch / Houck are shown here since these names are on vital certificates and articles.]"Tragic loss of two youths
Clifford "Bubby" Houk and his cousin along with two of their friends were having a "night out on the town" on Sunday when they had a little too much drink. The youths were celebrating because Bubby was on his way to Vietnam. Police Chief Bill Jackson arrested the four young men for drunk and disorderly conduct and locked them in the Davy City Jail, a long one-room jail cell in a cinder-block building. Jackson went home for the night since he went off duty. In the early hours on Monday, June 10, 1968, a mattress on the floor caught fire from a spark that apparently came from a snuffed out pile of burnt papers and smoldered for some time. Bubby and Morris Bennett, Jr., 19, of Asco [WV] died from smoke inhalation. He was 18 yrs 5 mos. 6 days old. The two other youths, Lawrence Wells, 19, and Bill Musick, 17, Bubby's cousin, escaped the smoke by breathing fresh air from a broken window, one of two in the building.___________
Note: Bubby talked with Irene's husband, who returned from a tour in Vietnam in Oct 1967, about Vietnam and what to expect when he got there. Bubby was extremely apprehensive about having to fight there.

Frances married James Marcus Byrd in 1899.] Grace Hospital, where Arthur died on 21 June 1967, provided his vital information from his medical records. William's grandmother, Martha Jane Catron Houk [Howk] raised him in Grayson Co., Elk Creek area. His grandfather, Fielden, died the year Arthur was born.

2) Cora Elizabeth Byrd Cole 1902- [Andy Cole]
3) Bertha Jane Byrd Jones [Camet Cephus Jones]
4) Clarence Hicks (Hix) Byrd [Lula Edna Crofts"m1: 4 Jul 1912. Arthur married [Laura] Rissie Belle Cline, daughter of William Riley Cline and Rachel Alice Smith, on Independence Day.
"A Patriot, a Veteran of WWI:
Arthur was a farm laborer living on his home farm when he was called to serve in the U.S. Army 21 September 1917. Rissie and her three young children stayed with H. Catron's (Arthur's uncle) farm in Carsonville while he was gone. After basic and demolition training at Camp Lee, VA, Arthur, a private, was assigned to the Infantry Division, Co. D 117 Ammunition Train. World War I was rapidly escalating and he departed Hoboken, NJ in 1918 heading to France. He arrived there in May and was sent into action at Baccarat Sector 12 May to 22 June 1918; then to Alene-Marne Offensive, Epides north to Fismes on 26 July to 10 August 1918; Toul Sector 11 September; St. Mihiel 12-16 September 1918; Toul Sector 16 September to 1 October 1918; Meuse-Argonne Offensive 11 Nov 1918 with the army of occupation on 17 Nov to 1 May 1919. He was shipped back to Camp Lee, VA and arrived there 19 May, 1919 and Honorably Discharged. Arthur's military grave marker incorrectly states he served with the state of West Virginia; however, VIRGINIA is the correct state."Grandparents:

An interesting family story occurred in 1939: A few of Arthur's children were sitting on the porch at Mohegan when their dad opened a letter and became very angry while reading it. His daughter believed it was from his family in Virginia and it was about his mother. Arthur tore the letter to shreds. (Most likely the letter notified Arthur that his mother had died. Fanny's death certificated was finally located last year.)"Spouse: [Laura] Rissie Belle Cline 1892-1969

* Names are used on vital certificates."A farmer in Virginia - Elk Creek, Carsonville, Independence, Galax -
During WWI, Grayson County turned "upside down" -- equipment, rent, food, clothing costs were above average. Community members liked receiving good salaries, higher payments for products whether manufactured or agriculture. In a short period of time, this economy became a way of life for them. However, after the war, the economy plummeted. No one could afford the higher prices nor pay higher rents. Arthur included. Arthur worked as a farm laborer as well as worked his own small family farm. He and Rissie lost one of their twins a son at 4 days old in 1913. As each past, making a living became more difficult for his wife and four children, ages 2 to 9 years. Their twin daughter Effie Grace was not listed on Arthur's discharge paper as Alva was and Effie was not listed on the 1930 Census. (Effie survived for a month and a half.)"Coal mining in southern West Virginia needer able-bodied men to work the coal mines. Company housing was a huge draw for men to come to the area. A few coal mine owners were exceptional bosses but many others were not. Carter Coal Company in Caretta was one of the good ones. It certainly drew Arthur to pull up stakes and move north.
"Migrated to McDowell Co. WV about 1922 to 1925. They settled first around the Cucumber/War area, then to Caretta where two children were born. They lived on Popular Road. Early in the 30's, he moved his family to the Welch area where his last son, Billy, was born. They remained there until after April 1935. Late 1930's he moved his family to Mohegan and worked for the JBB Coal Co at Twin Branch and the New River Pocohantas Coal Co. at Capels. A short move to a small farm at Bluewell; then to a small home next to daughter Juanita's home. This home was Arthur's and Rissie's last residence.

""* * * Month/YEAR of birth was MARCH 1892 * * *
"Rissie"/ "Rissa" Belle Cline's documents show her birth as 18 December(3a) 1892 in Grayson Co. VA to William Riley Cline and Rachel Alice Smith. However, this month conflicts with her siblings' birth. She was the fourth of eight or nine children. Her given name was Laura, but family and friends called her Rissa, but through the years, her nickname evolved into Rissie. The birth month somehow changed from March to December as several records indicate. Perhaps, the change can be attributed to states requiring birth certificates in the late 30's and early 40's because of the Social Security Act. (Several of her siblings' birth month/year also changed through the years.) However, Rissie and her family celebrated her birthday in December."Rissie married William Arthur Houk/ Howk* 4 July 1912, Independence Day. She was the mother of 3 girls and 6 boys, but Cleo's twin brother, Estell died at 6 days old. Alva's twin sister, Effie Grace, died at 1 month, 22 days old.
"According to death certificate, Rissie died of colon cancer in Pine Lodge Nursing Home, Beckly WV, 20 Mar 1969. Billy, her son, was the informant of her death certificate. Rissie was a rehab patient at the Pine Lodge Nursing Home for a period of time after stomach surgery. Eventually, she was released to her home where she lived for a few months, then re-admitted to the nursing home where she died.

"He owned his farm (a home farm)in Carsonville, Elk Creek, VA, but there was no work was available as a farm laborer in the area. Arthur and Rissie migrated to McDowell Co. WV about 1922 to 1925. In 1926, the family lived on Popular Point Road at Caretta in dwelling #40. Juanita and David were born in Caretta, and Billy was born in Welch in 1934. The older children attended the Caretta Elementary School. Arthur was a coal loader with Carter Coal Co. mines. About 1935, they moved to Deegans**, WV, to work for the New River Pocohantas Coal Co. During the early 50's, Rissie and Arthur relocated to a small farm at Bluewell. The children were grown. David went to his Uncle Emmett Isom and Billy stay with his brother Elbert at Capels. A short time later Arthur and Rissie moved into a two-room house next to daughter Juanita. Another room was added to it in the late 50's. The three-room residence was Rissie's last home.
**Region: The community was called Monarch, WV, prior to 1913, renamed to Deegans in 1913 to 1935; then renamed again to Mohegan in 1935."Granddaughter Memories...
My fondest memory of Grandma Rissie was her white hair that she always wore up and her Bible. She always had her Bible, most times in her hand. Sadly, it appears this family Bible was destroyed, I believe, at my mother's, Dorothy, home in the 2001 flood. As a child, our summer vacations were spent visiting the Houk, Cline, Isom and, I believe, Catron family farms. Oh, I remember all those cherries and little green apples -- in Grayson Co.------------------------

"Billy, 48, died 24 Nov 1982. He was born 18 October 1934 in Caretta, McDowell County, WV, to William Arthur Houk and [Laura] Rissie Belle Cline. Billy is the last child of eight children."Billy learned a trade -- washing dishes/equipment in restaurants -- that he was proud of providing for himself even though he had learning disabilities. During the 50's he lived with his older brother, Elbert, at Capels, Davy and back to Capels. In the late 50's or early 60's, Billy had to return to his parents' home at Welch because his brother's children were growing and they needed the room. However, Billy could not drive a car and had difficulty traveling into the city of Welch. He use a cab service for awhile. Eventually, he rented a room in a rooming house not far from the Grace Hospital (It has been closed for a number of years.) after his mother died. Billy walked the short distance to work.
"While living in Welch, Billy often walked around the city. His last walk was on 24 November where the Welch Police found him on the sidewalk near his boarding house. The autopsy determined that he died from a heart attack and fell to the sidewalk where he died.
