"CYCLONE - Carlton Shields departed this life Monday, Sept. 11, 2006, at the age of 78 years, 11 months and 22 days at his residence surrounded by his loving family following a short illness. "Born Sept. 20, 1927, at Brier Creek, he was the son of the late Newson and Mabel Morgan Shields. "Mr. Shields was a faithful member of Bright Prospect Missionary Baptist Church, a World War II veteran, had worked for the railroad, Cabot Gas Co. and was self-employed, cutting right-of-ways for various companies. He enjoyed hunting, camping and gardening. "In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Clayton Shields, Clarence Shields, Clifton Shields and Calvin Shields. "Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ella Jean Shields; two daughters, Deborah Conley of Brier Creek and Teresa Ridenour of Brenton; a son, Rodney Lusk and his wife, Anita, of Oceana; two stepsons, Carroll Lusk and his wife, Ruby, of Cyclone and Wendy Lusk and his wife, Debbie, of Stokedale, N.C.; a brother, Carmel Shields and his wife, Louise, of Brier Creek; a sister, Virginia S. Moore of Beckley; five grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild, several nieces, nephews and a host of friends. "A celebration of Carlton's life will be 1 p.m. Friday at Bright Prospect Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Jackie Lusk officiating. Burial will follow in Brown Cemetery, Cyclone, with full military honors by West Virginia Army National Guard program...."
