Redstone, Colo. (UPI) -- The bodies of 15 miners killed in an explosion deep inside a gassy Colorado coal mine were recovered Friday.
Rescue teams picked their way through piles of rubble in the mine tunnel to find nine of the bodies about 32 hours after a pocket of methane exploded Wednesday.
Five more bodies were found about three hours later, and the last victim was discovered Friday morning.
Federal officials vowed a "top to bottom" probe of the accident, the worst at the mine since a 1965 explosion killed nine miners.
The victims were found about 7,200 feet inside the sloping mine tunnel, which was described by one mine inspector as "one of the gassiest mines"
in the nation. The explosion apparently was triggered when the miners hit a pocket of methane gas, a volatile hydrocarbon associated with coal.
Miners say that being near a methane explosion would be like being in an exploding shotgun barrel.
One of the survivors, DAVID CHIARELLO, described the blast as a "little hurricane."
"The investigation, especially with the loss of life, will be from top to bottom," said federal Mine Safety and Health Administration spokesman Rick Kulczewski.
Kulczewski said it was too early to tell if something could have been done to prevent the explosion.

It had been a long vigil for the families, who huddled by a fire built in a rusty steel drum on the road to the mine. They held out hope that the men were alive until the bodies were found.
The rescue teams, working in four-hour shifts of six men each, were delayed in getting to the victims because they had to pick their way through rubble, restore the mine's ventilation system and pump icy mountain water out of the tunnel.

Simpson should be John H. Simpson, and he is the same person as Harrison Simpon (that's what the H. that was mistakenly transcribed as an A. stands for). I know this because he was my father. John Harrison Simpson was born on 28 November 1909, and died on 30 June 1988 in Princeton, WV. John Harrison was married three times. Marriage 1 was to Cosby Brewster. Marriage 2 was to Margie Opal Winfrey (my mother). Marriage 3 was to Opal Gladys Wyatt Kirk. He had only one child, myself, Judy Kay Simpson, born on 28 Apr 1949 in Beckley WV.
"I'm not sure who Georgia Simpson was. I think her father Joseph Simpson has to have been a different Joseph Simpson than my grandfather, because she is mentionned nowhere in any of the family records. (I incorrectly listed Gracie Simpson as Georgia Simpson from the 1930 Census)

She was educated in Wyoming county, during the War, she worked in the ship yards in Maryland and was a devoted homemaker. She was a member of the Johnston Chapel Baptist Church on the Halls Ridge Road in Princeton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husbands, Leon Kirk and Luther Green along with five brothers; Tracy, Lacy, Pierce, Harry and Dennis Wyatt. Survivors Her son, Thomas Kirk of Charleston SC Two Grandchildren Jason & Sarah and their mother Cheryl Kennedy Two Great grandchildren Annalinnea and Caroline Belle Brother, Greeley Wyatt & wife Lorna of Roanoke, Va. "Two children survive her: Pete Ballard of Peterstown and Patti Ballard LeNoir, Mrs. Joe LeNoir of Summersville, S.C. She is also survived by three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
