"Mary Lou Houck"Tallahassee - Mary Lou Houck, 94, of Tallahassee, Florida, passed away May 16, 2022.
"Lou was born in Princeton, West Virginia on October 9, 1927, to Roberta (Berdie) and Loren Shannon. She grew up in a loving family, first in Princeton and then in Mullens, West Virginia. She graduated from Mullens High School continuing on to business college. After graduation, she worked in insurance and then banking.
"Lou married Jack Bower Houck on January 25, 1948. They were a loving and caring couple for nearly seventy years when Jack passed. They moved to Tallahassee in 1959 with their two sons, Keith and Rod (Bo). She had a 30-year career with the loan department of Capital City Bank.
"Lou was dedicated to both family and the Lord. She developed lasting relationships and her home was a frequent gathering place for family, friends, and Bible studies. Lou was a fantastic mom. Both Lou and Jack attended nearly every sporting event that their sons were involved in. Even in her final days, she received visitations, phone calls, and cards from a number of her sons' high school friends.
"Lou had an active faith and shared her musical talents. She sang in the church choir, and for many years, served as pianist and organist at church. She also accompanied the Southside Quartet, which included Jack and her two sons, for nearly a decade.
"Lou is predeceased by her husband, her parents, and two sisters. She is survived by her sons, Keith Houck (Toni) and Rodney "Bo" Houck (Carla); her five grandchildren, Dustin Houck, Kevin Houck, Jackie (Houck) Toops, Jeffrey Houck and Shannon (Houck) Brewer; and her great-grandchildren Zoe, Van, Charlotte, Lily, Asher, Kendall, Carter, Austin, Maddox, Iris, and Daphne. Additionally, she is survived by a large extended, yet tightly connected, family and close friends.
"A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 22 at 2:00pm at Bevis Funeral Home, located at 200 John Knox Rd, Tallahassee, FL 32303. Mary Lou will later be interred at Tallahassee National Cemetery with her late husband, Jack Bower Houck.
