David Lynn Chapman

"Born November 2, 1953, at Mullens, he was the son of the late Junior E. and Ruth Bennett Chapman. "David was a life long resident of Mullens, a member of the Mullens United Methodist Church, a graduate of Mullens High School class of 1971, a 1976 graduate of Concord College obtaining a degree in Education, where he was a member of the TKE Fraternity. Recently (June 2010) he retired from the Wyoming County Board of Education with 34 years of service having taught at Mullens Elementary for the past 32 years, where he held various faculty-senate offices. "David served in many coaching capacities during his career. He was a former 5th -6th grade basketball coach at Mullens Elementary School where he coached in several undefeated seasons and won numerous county championships, and was a former 7th – 8th grade Mullens Middle School coach. Coach Chapman served as head baseball coach at Mullens High School from 1989-1998 where he led the baseball team to two state tournament appearances and in 1998 won state runner-up. David was also an assistant basketball coach from 1990-1998 and assistant football coach from 1989-1998 at Mullens High School, he coached on the staff that led the Rebels to a state championship in 1998. "David served as assistant football coach at Wyoming East from 1999-2002 and was a member of the 1999 football staff that led the Warriors to a state championship. He was also the assistant basketball coach at WEHS from 1990-2010 having coached on the 2002, 2008, and 2009 state tournament basketball teams. David was also a member of the WEHS baseball coaching staff where he served as assistant coach from 2003-2009. "David helped with many youth sports in our community where he coached in the Mullens Little League Baseball, was co-founder of Mullens Biddy Buddy Basketball, and was a former manager for the Mullens City Pool. "During his teaching and coaching career he was the recipient of many awards including being named Teacher of the Year at Mullens Grade School, Coalfield Conference Coach of the Year, and made numerous appearances in West Virginia state tournaments in basketball, baseball, and football. "He was a member of the Mullens Lion Club, the Mullens Moose Club, and in his leisure he was an avid WVU fan, boater, and golfer. "In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by his father and mother in law, Claude and Margaret Bane; and a brother in law, Bill Bane. "Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 20 years, Judy Bane Chapman; two sons, John M. Chapman and his wife, Katrina and their daughter, Khloe of Roanoke, Va. and Rory D. Chapman and his wife, Ashley and their son, Ryder of Mullens; two brothers, John E. Chapman of Brunswick, Ga. and Lee Grasser and his wife, Pat of Mullens; one brother in law, Larry Bane and his wife, Sara of Crab Orchard and two sister in laws, Linda Meadows and her husband, Bob of Bragg and Kathy Bane of Beckley; numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of many friends, students, players, and coaching colleagues. "Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, September 17, 2010, at Mullens United Methodist Church, Guyandotte Ave., Mullens, with Rev. Gerald Roberts and Pastor Bob Meadows officiating. "BALLARD — Loretta Gibson, 73, of Ballard, , W.Va., passed away, Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010, at Princeton Community Hospital, Princeton, W.Va., Born Nov. 28, 1936, at Baisden, she was the daughter of the late Arnold and Jenkie Ward Lester. "Mrs. Gibson owned and operated Loretta’s Drive In at Gilbert, W.Va. Loretta was a loving, kind and caring person for all that knew her. She was born into the family of God seven years ago and was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church at Red Sulphur Springs, W.Va. "In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jennifer Gibson. "Survivors include her husband, Neal Gibson; one son, Gregory Gibson of Ballard, W.Va.; one brother, Steve Lester and wife Wooline of Mesquite, Texas; two sisters, Barbara Hatfield and husband Billy of Ballard, W.Va., and Carolyn Prager and husband Chuck of Wellington, FL.; nieces and nephews: Vicky Hatfield, Lora Bowens, Jennifer Blankenship, Shane Hatfield, Wayne Hatfield, Scott Hatfield, Brad Childers, Keith Childers, Stephanie Lester and Jill Lester. "She was a care giver for Suzanne Prager for the last six years. "Her wishes were to be cremated. "A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel, Peterstown, W.Va., with Pastors Fred Justice and Freddie Reynolds officiating..."
