Betty Lou Graham

1. "Bluefield Dailey Telegrph"; Bluefield, WV; Saturday 18 Dec 2010; Newspaper Obit.
"RAYSAL — Mrs. Betty Lou (Graham) Asbury, 69, of Raysal, W.Va., passed away Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, in Mooresville, N.C., after a courageous battle with cancer. Betty slipped peacefully from this world into the loving embrace of her Heavenly Father surrounded by her devoted family, the playful laughter of her great-grandchildren, soft Christmas music, and her dog Zippy. "One of eight siblings, Betty was the eldest child of the late Mr. and Mrs. Willard (Helen Furo) Graham of Pineville, W.Va. She was a graduate of Pineville High School having recently enjoyed her 50th class reunion, and attended Concord College (now Concord University) in Athens, W.Va. She met and married the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Asbury, Jr. in 1963, and that union was blessed with the births of five daughters. Betty was a member of the Bradshaw United Methodist Church in Bradshaw, W.Va., where she sang with the voice of an angel. She loved her job with Avon, having just been honored for 30 years continued service as a representative. She was a charter member of the Ladies Aide Society in Raysal and also a member of the Bradshaw Rebekah Lodge #86. An animal lover, she was an animal rights advocate, never giving up on her hope that someday there would be no more homeless pets, and all shelters would be empty. At the time of her passing, she owned 18 cats and two dogs. A passionate flower gardener, she loved her many roses, dahlias, sunflowers and others and shared many cuttings and seeds with her friends through the years. Each year she and her husband Bob planted a vegetable garden from which she would home can the yummy bounty. Betty was a second mom to so many, including her own siblings in their early years. Her enthusiasm and kindness was inspiring. When her daughters were growing up, she was the mom who baked the cookies and chaperoned the school/band trips, even going along with Iaeger High School's award-winning Band of Gold to New Orleans in 1980 when they were invited to march in the Mardi Gras parade. She was the mom who led the fundraisers, and threw the birthday parties, the mom who, although had every moment of her time accounted for with her own children, managed to find abundant time for her children's friends as well. Generosity was a perfected art to Betty, and motherhood a sacred privilege that she honored with grace, compassion and endless love. Preceding her in death, in addition to her precious parents, were an older infant brother, and her beloved "Tippy." "Betty leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband of 47 years, Robert (Bob) Asbury Jr. of the home; her daughters, Desiree' (DD) Asbury Young and husband Dwight, Candace Asbury Vangile and husband Simon, Nerissa Asbury Kennedy and husband George, all of North Carolina, Heather Asbury and fiancé' Jimmy Sparks of Bradshaw, and Chantel Asbury Blankenship and husband Larry also of North Carolina; sisters, Frances Mikles, Beverly Riling, Barbara Laxton, Judy McNair, Yolanda Graham; and brother, Patrick Graham; a dear adopted sister, Vera Thomas; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a multitude of other family; and two fur-babies, Zippy and Beth. "Friends visited with the family on Friday, Dec. 17, 2010 from 6-9 p.m. at Fanning Funeral Home in Iaeger, W.Va. "Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010 with the Reverend Roger Hale Sr. and the Reverend Roger Hale, Jr. officiating at the chapel of Fanning Funeral Home in Iaeger. A memorial service will also be conducted by the Rebekah Lodge #86 of Bradshaw. Burial will immediately follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, 450 Courthouse Road, Princeton, W.Va..."
