"NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. — Rufus Alfred “Bud” Harman, age 81, of North Tazewell, Va., died Sunday, February 17, 2008 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield. "Born November 20, 1926 in Iaeger, he was a son of the late Rufus Ashworth Harman and Laura Belle Stacy Harman. Mr. Harman graduated from Grundy High School in 1943 and after one year at Virginia Military Institute (VMI) he entered the U.S. Army and served in the 6th Ranger Battalion in the Pacific and Japan during World War II. Following his war service, he graduated from Lynchburg College and served in the Virginia National Guard and the Army Reserves, from which he retired as a Colonel in 1979. Mr. Harman worked in insurance, furniture, and coal as a salesman until his full retirement four years ago. "In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Gertrude Sherman; one sister, Martha Virginia Cassell. "He is survived by his wife, Margaret Peery Cover Harman; one son, Robert Ashworth Harman, MD of Princeton, N.J.; one daughter, Jane Stacy Holloway of Decatur, Ga.; two grandsons and one granddaughter; one brother, Dr. John N. Harman IV of Longwood, Fla.; four stepsons, Arthur Byron Cover II of North Ridge, Calif., Dr. James Peery Cover of Northport, Ala., Dr. William Hurt Cover of Escondido, Calif., and Jesse Reece Cover III of Langhorne, Pa.
