"BISHOP, Va. — James A. Altizer, 84, of Bishop, Va., died Sunday, March 18, 2007 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center. Born April 26, 1922 at War, he was a son of the late Harrison B. Altizer and Julia Harman Altizer. He was a member of the Riverside United Methodist Church at North Tazewell, Va. and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. Mr. Altizer was a retired coal miner and member of the UMWA Local No. 6025 at Bishop, Va. "In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janice P. Waddell Altizer; one grandson, Glen Allen Brooks; several brothers and sisters. Survivors include four daughters, Sandy Brooks and husband, Don of Baptist Valley, Va., Diane Brooks and Libby Ross both of Tazewell, Va., and Kathy Sword of Bishop, Va.; two sons, Randy Altizer and wife, Betty of Hampton, Va. and Les Altizer of Baptist Valley; his devoted special companion, Pansy Wright of North Tazewell; two sisters, Tootsie and Grace both of Indiana; two brothers, J.C. Altizer and wife, Ruth of Cedar Bluff, Va., and Richard Olan Altizer and wife, Brenda of North Tazewell; 16 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; six step grandchildren; and two step great grandchildren. "Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va. with the Rev. Kenneth Gillespie officiating. "J. C. Altizer, age 86, of the Baptist Valley section in Cedar Bluff, Virginia passed away Monday, November 18, 2013 at Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell, Virginia following a lengthy illness.
He was born in War, West Virginia and was the son of the late Harrison and Julia Bell Harman Altizer of Tazewell County, Virginia. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II. He was a former coal miner and a Maytag repairman for 28 years for Shraders, Inc. in Richlands, Virginia. He lived all his life in the Cedar Bluff area. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Nannie Ryder and Theda Asbury; two brothers, James Altizer and Bailey Altizer.
He is survived by:

Funeral services for J. C. Altizer will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Thursday, November 21, 2013 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with Rev. Gordon McBride officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be: Garland Bandy, Gary Altizer, Austin Altizer, Tom Alley, Eddie Grimsley and Jimmy Wallace. The Altizer family will receive friends from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm Wednesday evening at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home; 1401 Second Street; Richlands, Virginia.
