"ALEXANDRIA, Ind. — Lillian Cook Ankrum, 96, passed away March 14, 2008, in Tipton, Ind. "She was born Sept. 19, 1911, in Oceana, the only child of Carrie and Heber Cook. All were direct descendants of John Cook, a Revolutionary War soldier and the first permanent settler of Wyoming County in 1799. "Lillian grew up in the coal country of southern West Virginia, spending time in both Oceana and in Omar, Logan County. In 1927, she married Glen Beckwith Ankrum, a school teacher in Omar. They moved to Alexandria in the late 1920s and were the parents of Glenn Eugene and James Robert Ankrum. Mr. Ankrum preceded her in death in 1971. Her son Glenn, a U.S. naval commander, died in 1968 while serving his country during the Vietnam War and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Her son Bob passed away in 1993 and is buried in Park View Cemetery in Alexandria. "Lillian lived a long, eventful and independent life. After raising two sons through the 1930s’ Great Depression, she gained employment at Delco Remy Anderson at the end of WW II and retired in 1975 after 30 years of service. A former member of Alexandria First United Methodist Church, Lillian lived in the Anderson/Alexandria area most of her adult life. She drove a car until age 89 and maintained her own home in Alexandria only until recent physical limitations required her to seek assisted living in Tipton. "Survivors include grandchildren, Keith Ankrum of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Linda (Bill) Lamberjack of Fishers, Ind., and Jim (Michele) Ankrum of Tipton; great-grandchildren, Rachel and Maggie Lamberjack of Fishers and Hannah, Caroline, Mary Ellen and Rebekah Ankrum of Tipton; daughters-in-law, Magdalena Ankrum of San Diego, Calif., and Barbara (Baxter) Ankrum of Alexandria; and first cousins, Ed and Bill Clay and Virginia (Clay) Farthing of the Carolinas and Ken Clay of Florida. Pastor Michael Deutsch of Alexandria First Baptist Church officiated...."
