"PRINCETON — Sherman Lowell McKinney, 73, of Princeton, was called to his Heavenly Home on Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at Princeton Community Hospital following a long illness. "Born April 22, 1934, at Basin, he was the son of the late Sherman McKinney and Lissie Shrewsbury McKinney. "Mr. McKinney was retired from Peabody Coal Co. after 38 years of service and was a member of the UMWA. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of Silver Springs Baptist Church in Princeton where he served as deacon. He was an avid deer and turkey hunter. He was a devoted husband, father and papaw. "He was preceded in death by three brothers, Elden McKinney, Curtis McKinney and Dale McKinney; three sisters-in-law, Virginia McKinney, Billie McKinney and Elvia McKinney; and two brothers-in-law, Hearley McKinney and Raymond White. "Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Opal Shrewsbury McKinney; a daughter, Pamela Thorne and her husband, Terry, of Princeton; a son, Wayne McKinney and his wife, Linda, of Harrisonburg, Va.; two grandsons, Christopher and Joel Thorne, who were the apple of his eye; three brothers, Buren McKinney and his wife, Carol, of Garwood, Ray McKinney and his wife, Freda, of Basin and Bert McKinney of Hardy, Va.; four sisters-in-law, Merle McKinney of Bud, Leona McKinney of Beckley, Hester Martin and her husband, Al, of Shady Spring and Elsie McKinney and her husband, Britian, of Basin; and two brothers-in-law, Harold Shrewsbury and his wife, Connie, of Odd and Dale Shrewsbury and his wife, Anthonette, of Beckley.
