Ronald James Mullins

1.. Evans-Calfee Funeral Service; Pineville, WV; Posted Obit.
"Ronald James Mullens 68, of Pineville went to that Big Mountaineer Tailgate in the sky, on June 22, 2017 follow a long courageous battle with cancer.

"Born September 25, 1948 in Welch, he was the son of the late Ivan and Senea Goode Mullens.

"Ron was a 1966 graduate of Pineville High School. He then went on to attend his beloved West Virginia University, graduating in 1970 from the school of Journalism. He began working for the Dominion Post in Morgantown, first as a reporter then became a regional editor.

"When his father's health began to decline, he came home to help his mother with the family business, Mullens' Greenhouse in East Pineville. He returned to journalism at the Welch Dailey News first as a part time reporter, and then as the assistant editor. Next he came to the Independent Herald in Pineville, he did many jobs at the paper on his way to becoming the editor. During his time at the Independent Herald, Ron was awarded many times for his outstanding writing and photography, by the West Virginia Press association. He was known for his descriptive writing style, and his entertaining weekly columns.

"After retiring from Journalism, Ron worked for Cook Manufacturing Company in Jesse, fulfilling his lifelong dream to “build things”.

"At one time Ron was an extremely passionate Mountaineer Football fan for a period of over 25 years. He attended every WVU home game and bowl game while still covering Wyoming County sports on Friday Night. During that time in 1980 he was part of the Opening of Mountaineer Field, he was there as John Denver sang “Country Roads” at the first home game. That same day prior to kickoff, Ron was among the first fans to tailgate at a Mountaineer home game, where tailgating had been allowed.

"In 1988, Ron had the good fortune to attend all the home and away games as WVU went 11-0 and played Notre Dame for the National Championship, where if Major Harris does not get hurt, WVU would have probably won. LOL

"Ron was instrumental in the formation of the Wyoming County chapter of the WVU alumni association and was one of its founding officers. He was the first to hold the most prominent position in the chapter, which was Co-Chair of Tailgating.

"Ron’s true lifelong passion was his love for railroading, especially steam engines. He became a rail fan at a very young age as he watched trains from his grandparents’ home as they ran the tracks by the Guyandotte River on the Virginia Railroad Line. As a youngster, he would draw in detail the trains he would see traveling the tracks. He spent many years traveling, many miles, to photograph and video the trains he loved so dearly. He had a vast collection of railroad memorabilia and model trains. He was an authority on the history of the Virginia Railroad and its presence in Wyoming county.

"Ron leaves behind his Aunt Watsie Hill, his Uncle Lloyd Goode, and his Uncle John Mullens and many cousins. His caregivers, and former employers Larry and Barbara Cook, his special friends and fellow railroad fans George and Virginia Boggs. His neighbors Bobby and Lynn Jenkins. A lifelong friend and fellow Mountaineer fan Dr.Everett Bowling.

"In keeping with Ron’s wishes he will be cremated and there will be no services."
