"On Wednesday, March 21, 2007, John Brooks, of Beaver, formerly of Mullens, died at the Lucy Bowers Hospice House following a short illness. He was in his 85th year."Born John Burdiss Brooks on Oct. 5, 1921, he was one of two children born to the late John Randolph and Helen Elizabeth Burdiss Brooks."Known affectionately as “J.B.” all his life, John spent his childhood at East Gulf, where he graduated from Stoco High School, Class of 1941. He entered the U.S. Navy during World War II where he served on the USS Essex. John attended Beckley College and the University of Kansas. A certified welder and electrician, he worked for Allied Chemical."John lived in Mullens with his beloved wife, Lona, for 42 years, where they raised their two daughters. He was a member of Mullens United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge. In 1993, the Brooks moved to the Oaks at Beaver where they settled at “Quiet Oak.” He and Lona enjoyed each other’s company and loved to take walks together. They became members of Perry Memorial United Methodist Church at Shady Spring."In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by twin infant granddaughters; his sister, Patricia Ann McNeish; and his stepmother, Louise Miller Brooks.He was the beloved husband of Lona Hitechew Brooks, whom he married on Sept. 3, 1946; the beloved father and dear grandfather and great-grandfather of “his girls,” daughters, Johndra Ann Sutphin and her husband, Steve, of Beckley, Helen Marie Gragg and her husband, George, of Cary, N.C., granddaughters, Krista M. Meadows and her husband, Greg, Jessica L. Gragg and Amanda E. Cagle and her husband, Chris; a great-granddaughter, Abbigale P. Cagle; a brother-in-law, Robert “R.L.” Hitechew of Las Vegas, Nev.; a large extended family; his loyal companion, Prissy; and his faithful caregivers, JoAnna Webb and Sherry Farr. The family would like to give a special thanks to the Hospice of Southern West Virginia and the Lucy Bowers Hospice House for all their care and compassion."Service will be 7 p.m. today at Perry Memorial United Methodist Church, Shady Spring, with the Rev.
