" "THE DEATH OF BRUNO FRESTACHI
"Bruno Frestachi left Sicily in 1903 for the port of
Reggio di Calabria in Italy, where he stowed away on a
freighter bound for New York. Standing in the long lines
of immigrants at Ellis Island, he realized he had finally
made it to America where he heard the streets were
paved with gold. Hours ot waiting to be inspected, Bruno
listened intently to the weary travellers in front of him as
they were interrogated by customs. ln front of Bruno
were a man and his wife who spoke a little English. As the
inspector questioned them, Bruno heard the man say his
name was “Charlie," and that his wife’s name was “Nell.”
"lntense excitement overcame Bruno. “l have finally
made it to America!” “From now on," he thought, l will
be an American!" As he approached the gate, the tall
American inspector looked at him up one side and down
the other. Fearing he would be turned away, Bruno tried
to make the best impression he could. He held his head
up, took a deep breath and arched his shoulders. His
stature was small. Over shadowed by the tall American,
he stood at attention as the inspector spoke. “Where do
you come from," asked the inspector. “Italia," Bruno
replied. “Why did you come to America,” the inspector
quizzed. Bruno, hoping to give all the right answers,
groped for the few English words he knew. “To worky,"
he told the inspector. “Where is your destination,“ asked
the inspector. “Vesty Veergeeny,” Bruno replied.
"Hoping the inspector would approve, Bruno prayed
he would be allowed to pass through the gate. “Just one
step through that gate, “he thought,” and l‘ll be an Amer-
ican!” As the inspector filled out forms with the informa-
tion he gave, Bruno could only think of what his life
would be like in America! He was so close to the gate
the portal of his new life. Bruno had made it this far. He
just knew he would get through that gate!
"The inspector was almost through writing the infor-
mation. Bruno knew, at that moment, mat he was going
to be an American! There was something about the way
the inspector filled out the forms. “I am almost here",
Bruno thought, “and I am leaving Sicily behind.“ “One
more step, and HI be an American,” he thought, “just
one more step through that gate.“ The inspector looked
at him and started to speak as he flipped through the pa—
pers on his clipboard. “What did you say your... Appear-
ing to be confused, the inspector hesitated as he looked
through the papers, At that moment, Bruno Frestachi
died. Shuttling the papers on his clipboard, the inspector
looked at Bruno and asked, “What did you say your name
was?" The first thought that came to his mind at that
moment was of the man and woman in line in front of
him who spoke English. The inspector asked him again,
“What is your name?” My great-grandfather proudly
replied, “Charlie Nell."
