He was a member of the Pineville Masonic Lodge No. 138, was a 32nd Degree Mason, Masonic Shrine, Independent Order of Odd Fellows and was a former employee of the Eastern Associated Coal Corp. at Kopperston. Survivors include his wife, Velma Walker Brooks; one stepson, Kennis Cooke of Huntington; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Burial will be in the Chambers Cemetery at Oceana. "Leaving a lovely legacy, the Rev. Sherman “Poppy June” Sizemore Jr., 75, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006. "He was born Sept. 30, 1930, at Northfolk to the late Sherman and Violet Byrd Sizemore. "His ministry for the Lord began in 1956 when he served as the first deacon for Herndon Freewill Baptist Church. Sherman’s ministry encompassed 40 years serving as pastor of Free Will Baptist churches at Pierpoint, Herndon, Basin and Spruce Grove and Sweet Home Baptist Church. Sherman served as an ordained minister in the Beckley Conference of Free Will Baptist for 53 years and was a chairman at his passing. For several years, Sherman conducted a live radio broadcast on WWYO in Pineville. He was a great friend and mentor to many young ministers of the Beckley Conference. In addition to his ministry, Sherman supplied the needs of his family by working more than 30 years in the mining industry. He retired in 1973 after working for Consol Coal. "He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Ruby Roberts Sizemore; a son, Kevin and wife, Tena, of Morganton, N.C.; three daughters, Lenoka Graham and husband, James, of Mount Hope, Sheila Dickens and husband, Clarence, of Beckley and Cleila Spratt and husband, Randy, of Salisbury, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Karen Sizemore of Charlotte, N.C.; four brothers, Marion McGinnis Sizemore and wife, Madeline, and Jackie Sizemore and wife, Shirley, all of Fort Pierce, Fla., Tommy Sizemore and wife, Joyce, and Harold Sizemore of Herndon; six sisters, Vida Brooks, Margie Walker and husband, Weldon, and Thelma Dennison and husband, Paul, all of Fort Pierce, Daisy Welch and husband, Davis, of Washington, D.C., Hazel Sizemore of Bluefield, Va., and Annie McDonald of Vidalia, Ga.; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
