"Nola L. Shrewsberry, 69, of Ghent, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, S. Ferrel and Jim R. Goes, in Bourbon, Mo., following a courageous battle with cancer. "She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence Blackburn and Gladys Basham Shrewsberry, and an infant sister, Eva Dian. "Born Oct. 1, 1936, at Basin, she was the beloved seventh child of 11 children and the beloved sister of Reynard C. Shrewsberry (Eva F.) of Paducah, Ky., Alma E. Lusk (Tollison Jr.) of Bud, Imarie Zambrana (Luis G., deceased) of St. Louis, Mo., Lela Fern Dame (Robert J., deceased) of Ghent, Reva R. Shrewsberry of Ghent, Zelma J. Greathouse (H. Allen, deceased) of St. Louis, S. Ferrel Goes (Jim R.) of Bourbon, Reynold C. Shrewsberry (Violet C.) of Basin and Karen S. Marsh (James L.) of Arlington, Va.; beloved aunt of 17 nieces and nephews and 24 great-nieces and great-nephews. "Nola attended Long Wanted Elementary School in Egeria and graduated from Mark Twain High School in Stotesbury. She received a degree from Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, N.C., and then graduated from The American Institute Business School in Washington, D.C. Her professional career began in Washington, D.C., in the early 1960s. In 1969, she joined the staff of the National Geographic Society’s Television Division working especially with division directors and executive producers of both the hour-long Television “Specials” feature films which aired on PBS television, and the Educational Films. She enjoyed the opportunity of attending conferences and seminars to introduce and demonstrate film-related educational materials. After 25 years Nola retired from National Geographic Society on Sept. 30, 1994. "Always interested in promoting education to children, Nola made personal donations of educational materials to public schools in West Virginia. Also committed to preserving family ties and family history, she took a leading role to organize reunions and family events. "Nola attended Mount Pisgah Church in Basin throughout her youth, was baptized, and continued her life in the Christian faith. "Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel, Mullens, with the Rev. Hugh McKinney officiating. Music will be provided by Pamela and Jeffrey Bishop. Burial will follow in the Shrewsberry Family Cemetery at Barkers Creek. Family members will serve as pallbearers..."
