"Shumate, May, 92.died in a Beckley hospital Friday at 5 p.m. following a long illness. Born July 10, 1883, at Matheny, she was a daughter of the late Charles S. and Mary Jane Workman Stewart. A lifelong resident of Matheny, she attended the Matheny Church of God. Survivors include her husband, John R. Shumate; two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Workman, and Mrs. Ettie Jane Cook, both of Matheny; a son, John Bee Shumate, Fort Worth, Tex; a sister, Mrs. Addie Stewart, Matheny; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren. Burial will be in the family cemetery. [Beckley Post-Herald ( no date other than 1975)] "
