"BLUEFIELD - Jack Russell Brown, 84, of Bluefield, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005 at home after a courageous battle with cancer. "He was born on June 6, 1921 in Brewsterdale, now Big Creek, the son of James Richard Brown and Elizabeth Pearl Murray. Jack was the fourth of nine children of the Brown family. He was a quiet, loving man who was inherently dedicated to his family, country and fellow man. "He served in the Army during WWII and received a purple heart for injuries he received on June 6, 1944, during the invasion of Normandy. He also received the American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Bonze Service Arrowhead and FAME Ribbon with four Bronze Stars for campaigns in Normandy and Rhineland. He often remarked that that day was quite a memorable birthday. "He owned and operated Jack Brown's Garage in Squire, for many years before joining the Pocahontas Fuel Co. in the late 1960s where he worked until his retirement. His love of nature and the great outdoors was unprecedented. His family and friends believed the term “gone fishin'” originated with him. "In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Hilda, Catherine and Nancy; four brothers, James, Charles, Ray and Richard. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Lillie B. Brown and second wife, Zella Patton Brown. "Survivors include children, Pierce L. Brown, Kenneth R. Brown and Jackie B. Worthington; stepchildren, Rebecca Little and Jack Whalen; sister, Rita Grace Kinkead; several nieces and nephew and 11 grandchildren. "BLUEFIELD - Jack Russell Brown, 84, of Bluefield, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005 at home after a courageous battle with cancer. "He was born on June 6, 1921 in Brewsterdale, now Big Creek, the son of James Richard Brown and Elizabeth Pearl Murray. Jack was the fourth of nine children of the Brown family. He was a quiet, loving man who was inherently dedicated to his family, country and fellow man. "He served in the Army during WWII and received a purple heart for injuries he received on June 6, 1944, during the invasion of Normandy. He also received the American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Bonze Service Arrowhead and FAME Ribbon with four Bronze Stars for campaigns in Normandy and Rhineland. He often remarked that that day was quite a memorable birthday. "He owned and operated Jack Brown's Garage in Squire, for many years before joining the Pocahontas Fuel Co. in the late 1960s where he worked until his retirement. His love of nature and the great outdoors was unprecedented. His family and friends believed the term “gone fishin'” originated with him. "In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Hilda, Catherine and Nancy; four brothers, James, Charles, Ray and Richard. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Lillie B. Brown and second wife, Zella Patton Brown. "Survivors include children, Pierce L. Brown, Kenneth R. Brown and Jackie B. Worthington; stepchildren, Rebecca Little and Jack Whalen; sister, Rita Grace Kinkead; several nieces and nephew and 11 grandchildren.
