ROANOKE, Va. - Rev. Ulysses G. Bailey, 86, of the Roanoke, Va. United Methodist Home, formerly of the Whitmell community, died on March 24, 2005. Rev. Bailey was born on Dec. 19, 1918 in McComas, the son of the late Grover Cleveland Bailey and Mabel O'Brien Bailey. Rev. Bailey graduated from Emory and Henry College and Duke University. He served at different locations with the Methodist Conference for 39 years and retired from Providence-Whites Churches in Lynchburg, Va. He was a member of Whitmell United Methodist Church, the Ruritan Club, Lyn-Dan Heights and Snow Creek Masonic Lodge No. 90 and a Master Mason. He had been a resident of the United Methodist Home since 1998. He married Irene Virginia Hall on Oct. 1, 1954. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Hall Bailey on Aug. 28, 1994; son, Stanley Bailey; brothers, Leonard, Clinton, Bernard, Delmar, David; and sisters, Mamie Bailey Taylor and Dora Bailey Baldwin. He is survived by his son: Jeffrey Noel Bailey of Glen Allen, Va.; daughter: Gloria Armfield of Middleburg, Va.; four sisters: Zelma Settle of Riverview Nursing, Rich Creek, Va., Bonnie Hodge of Rocky Gap, Va., Bridget Morrow of Fredericksburg, Va., and Patricia Sadtler of Lecanto, Fla.; four brothers: Raymond Bailey of Mansfield Center, Conn., William Bailey of Palatka, Fla., Marvin Bailey of Ward, Ark., and Kenneth Bailey of Casa Grande, Ariz.; four grandchildren and one great-great-grandchildren.
