" MALINDA FRANCES (VEST) GARNER
"Malinda Frances Vest was born either Jan»
uary 1861 (census record) or 5 December
1856 (death certificate) in Giles County, Vir-
ginia, one of eleven children of William Calvin
Vest and Mary Jane (Walters) Vest. Malinda
appears in the 1870 Giles County census with
her parents, but in the 1880 Giles County cen—
sus, she is 23 years old, working in the home
of William Woodyard as a domestic servant.
Her young son, David Crockett Collins, age 3,
lives with her parents.
"About 1885, Malinda married Joseph J. Gar-
ner, a Swedish-born carpenter, who came to
the United States in 1865, but was not a natu»
ralized Citizen. They had no children, together,
but Joseph adopted Malinda’s young son and
gave him his last name. From the time of Malin-
da’s marriage to Joseph, little David’s family
name became Garner and remains so today.
"Malinda was reportedly a tall woman, much
taller than Joseph Garner, who was short and
described as a “hunchback” by family mem-
bers. With her high cheek bones, Malinda was
believed to have had lndian blood, possibly
Cherokee. This author has thoroughly checked
Vest family records for many generations and
cannot find any confirmation of this family leg—
end, which may have been sparked by the
“Indian Style" belt she is wearing in one of the
few remaining photos of her, accompanying
this article.
"Presumably Joseph Gamer died by 1917, as
Malinda Garner married Peter "Pete" Ward on 3
May of that year. Their McDowell County
license lists laeger as her place of residence
and Hodertield as Pete’s. Pete Ward lists his
birthplace as Wythe County, Virginia Both
bride and groom give their ages as fifty,
although the bride was actually between 56 and
61 at the time. The 1920 McDowell County cen-
sus shows Pete and Malinda living in the town-
ship of Warrior, where he was working as a
coal miner. (Pete is listed in 1920 as fifty-three,
but Malinda still gives her age as fifty!)
"Malinda died 30 October 1922 at Roderfield,
according to her death certificate, which lists
her age as 66 and her birthdate as 5 December
1856. She is buried at Iaeger Memorial Ceme-
tery at Rodertield.
"According to the author's late mother, Con-
stance Jane “Connie" (Garner) Newton, who
heard the story from Malinda’s son David
(Collins) Garner and his wife Amanda, Malinda
was rumored to have ridden into laeger one
day on a horse to pick up her mail when she
has attacked by a mountain lion, or “саtty—
mount,“ which she killed with her hunting knife.
Clearly, from the demeanor in her few remain-
ing photos, great-great grandma Malinda was
not a woman to be trifled with! submitted by San-
