Julia Roselle Zekany

1. "The Independent Herald", Pineville, WV, newspaper obit, Wednesday 18 Feb 2004.
"Julia Roselle Zekany McGraw was born November 11, 1913, at Wilkinson, Logan, West Virginia. She died on February 11, 2004, at the age of 90. She was the daughter of Alexander Zekany and Elizabeth Gyenge, who both emigrated from Hungary to New York in 1907 and in 1909 to Logan, West Virginia. Alexander Zekany served in the Austro-Hungarian army before coming to America as a master ironworker and Blacksmith in the coal mines until his death in 1962. Julia's childhood was filled with rich religious traditions of the Eastern Orthodox Catholic Church and her mother's Calvinist faith discipline. The priest eventually ceased coming to Logan County and then as Julia loved to tell: "We children were dressed in our best and taken to the nearest Sunday school and church - be it Presbyterian, Baptist, Methodist or Pilgrim Holiness; we went!"
Julia is preceded in death by her siblings: Paul Zekany, Peter Zekany, Miklos Sandor Zekany, Anna Zekany Allee, Antal Zekany, Elizabeth Zekany Lovejoy and Mariska Szult Zekany. Julia's sister Virginia Sonye lives in Loraine, Ohio.
Julia graduated from Logan High School and then received a full scholarship to Berea College in Kentucky. She majored in home economics and biological science. While at Berea, she belonged to the Harmonic Society and performed in Handel's "Messiah", Gilbert and Sullivan's "H.M.S. Pinafore", "Pirates of Penzance" and "Trial by Jury". She also traveled throughout Kentucky performing with the College Octet. Julia was a member of the Pi Epsilon Pi sorority. Julia graduated from Berea College in 1935. Central philosophy of Berea College is service to the Appalachian community and while attending her 60th college reunion, Julia was recognized for her service and her family's service in education and government to West Virginia.
Julia received her master's degree in elementary education from Marshall University. Julia was an educator and began her teaching career at Milam High School at McGraws, West Virginia. She continued to teach for over 40 years at various schools including Oceana, Baileysville, Herndon, Mullens High, Glen Morrison and Wyoming and Pineville Middle. Julia was active in various professional organizations serving as president of the Wyoming Association of Classroom Teachers (ACT), president of the Wyoming County Education Association (CEA) and delegate to the National Education Association Assembly.
Julia was also active in a multitude of community activities including member and president of the Pineville Woman's Club and member and president of the Castle Rock Garden Club. She was involved in many beautification and recreational projects and in the establishment of mini-parks in the Pineville area. Julia was named "Gardener of the Year" in 1975. Julia was also selected as "Citizen of the Year" in 1982 for her active role in the establishment of Twin Falls State Park and in the acquisition of land from Georgia-Pacific Corporation for the Wyoming Youth Camp. Mrs. McGraw was also a charter member of the Pineville Lioness Club.
Serving her church, the United Methodist Church of Pineville, was always a major part of her life. She was an active participant in all women's division projects. She served as president of the Woman's Society of Christian Service. She served as a teacher in Bible studies, adult Sunday school classes, and in her younger years when her sons were growing, as director of the summer Bible school at the Milam Methodist Church in McGraws.
Julia Zekany married Darrell V. McGraw in 1935. Darrell McGraw, teacher and principal, preceded her death in 1995. Julia and Darrell are survived by four sons: Attorney General Darrell V. McGraw, Jr., Justice Warren Randolph McGraw, Mark Jerome McGraw and Brian Timothy McGraw. Julia was the grandmother to eleven grandchildren: Elizabeth McGraw-Austin, Baltimore, Maryland; Sarah McGraw Plaster, Banks, Oregon; Darrell V. McGraw III, London, England; Elliott Catherine McGraw, UCLA, Los Angeles, California; Warren Randolph McGraw II, Beckley, W.Va.; Judge Helen Suzanne McGraw, Beckley, W.Va.; Dr. Rebecca Thaxton, Sissonville, W.Va.; Crystal Davis, Beckley, W.Va.; Aaron McGraw, Pineville, W.Va.; Bradley McGraw, Pineville, W.Va.; and Portia Thames, Pineville, W.Va. Julia is survived by twelve great grandchildren.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to all the staff at Mary's Garden and the Marmet Nursing Center for the wonderful care provided during Julia's illness.
The family would request that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Pineville United Methodist Church.
The Calfee Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be Sunday, February 15, 2004, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the Pineville United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 15, 2004, at Pineville United Methodist Church."
