"Notes from researchers, Barbara Franklin and Christopher Vest: "In the 1850 Virginia Census, Tazewell County, James Harvey Vest (a.k.a. Harvey Vess) is an "Outbound", age 11,
in the home of Francis McGuire, A Farmer. Next door to the McGuire family is the family of Les H Whitt, Dwelling #
1273 with A Nancy Vess as an "Outbound" child, age 9, presumed to be a sister of James Harvey Vest. Five farms
down is the family of William Patton Harper, Uncle to Rachel Jane Harper.
"1860 Tazewell, Virginia Census: James Harvey Vest married Rachel Jane Harper about 1855-1857, Virginia. The
1860 census shows him to be married to a Rachell and living next door to the McGuire Family. Nancy Vest shows to
be living in the McGuire home instead of the Whitt home. William Patton Harper is listed to be on the other side of
McGuire. "1861: Aug. 22, 1861, James Harvey Vest a.k.a. James H Vess, enrolled in the Company D, 23rd Battalion Infantry
Regiment Virginia. Enlisted in Tazewell, Virginia. Rank: Private/Musician. Went on leave December 1862 and back
on Rolls 1 Feb 1863 and remained until War ended. Paroled after giving oath of Allegiance: June 12th, 1866,
Charleston, West Virginia. Paroled as Rank: Private/Musician. Description: Age 27, fair complexion, Blue eyes, Light
hair, Musician. Entry Note: Also known as James H Vess. Source: Document of the War Department.
"1870 census: Last abode: Maiden Spring, Tazewell, Virginia. About 1872, James Harvey Vest and Rachell and
children went by Covered Wagon to Gilmore Creek, Morgan County, Kentucky.
"1875: Rachell Harper Vest died either during child birth or after child birth of daughter Rhoda Alice Vest.
"1880 census: Precinct 2, Wolfe County, Kentucky. (He still lived in same place. Wolfe County was formed out of
Morgan County). Age 42, a Farmer/Home Farm, 8 children living at home. Census shows him to be married to a
Rachel, but Rachel was already deceased at that time. (1875).
"1883: James Harvey Vest marries Elizabeth Calhoun. Age of James: 45, and age of Elizabeth: 17. They
remained married until James deceased. James & Elizabeth had three children together. The first child was a
daughter, Rachel Jane Vest, named for Jame's first wife, Rachel.
"1901: 11 Feb 1901, James died of (presumed) "Flux". It is believed he is buried in the Haddix Cemetery,
however, that is not confirmed.
"1938: 12 Dec 1938, Elizabeth Calhoun applied for CSA pension for widowed wives of CSA soldiers. Application
number: 4816.
"Recently I spoke with a Walt Vest, a descendent, age 81. He said that he does not know who James Harvey
Vest's father was, but he did know that the ancestors date back to Liverpool, England. He further said that Sterling
Vest had the Vest Chronicles, which had all the Vest ancestors in it, but when Sterling Vest passed away, the
Chronicles disappeared. Walt also stated that James' grandfather came to Falls Church, Virginia in the mid
1700s and that he was an English Squire.
"Source: George Willard Vest (son of Howard Hagar Vest, son of David Jackson Vest): Mr. Vest explained to me
that James Harvey Vest originally was buried on David Jackson Vest's property on Johnson Fork Road.
However, when the home was sold, James Harvey Vest's grave was moved to another site and he does not
know where the other site is."
