"Mitchell Cook was a stonemason by trade and built a large home for his first family. In 1850, he was was awarded the contract to build the first jail in Wyoming County, including living quarters or house for the jailor. In the 1850 Census he was listed as age 33, stonemason, $800. His wife Mary was 29 and his five children ranged in age from 2 to 12. In 1851, he was granted a license to have a boarding house at his home. Mitchell also served as the County Surveyor for six years beginning June 25, 1858. The first legislature of WV in 1863 named Mitchell as one of the three commissioners who were to divide Wyoming County into townships."Mitchell and his first wife Mary were known for their hospitality, regularly hosting the Methodist circuit preachers who conducted monthly meetings at their home in Keyrock for at least two decades. Mitchell was also a licensed Methodist exhorter who often preached. He wished very much to have a Methodist meeting house built on his land. He donated the site and a small frame meeting house was completed in 1892 (only a few months before he died) and was named Cook's Chapel. He sometimes preached at Baptist service upon request. He also donated the property for the Keyrock schoolhouse (where many in my family first went to school)."Mitchell strongly believed in the Union cause, and along with his brother Richard Madison Cook, was active in the formation of the new state of West Virginia in 1863. Several of his sons served in the Union Army. In 1863, Mitchell was elected to the WV House of Delegates from the Sixth District, which included Wyoming, Raleigh, and McDowell Counties. He also served in the Second WV Legislature in 1865. He also served in the fourth session of the House of Delegates which met June 1866. During his terms he secured the passage of several bills including the appropriation of funds for the Walnut Gap Road from Boone County to Wyoming County. He supported the joint resolution to Congress urging the annexation of Berkley and Jefferson County to WV. He supported a bill providing a well-defined school law and another for locating the State Penitentiary at Moundsville. "In 1866, one of his cousins John Cook III, known as "Little Jack" was a candidate for State Senate and received more votes than his opponent Robert Hager who contested the election and won. Cooke's friends, sore about his defeat, teamed up during the next election and elected Little Jack's first cousin Mitchell to the State Senate in 1869. "His wife Mary "Polly" died, leaving him with several small children under the age of ten. Shortly thereafter in 1864, he married Jane Minerva Pasley Laxton, the widow of Thomas Laxton, Sr."Family legend has it that Mitchell was alo quite physically strong. One story tells of a feud between Mitchell and Micajah White. Though Mitchell was much smaller than White, they met on a road to settle their differences. During the fight, White bit Mitchell's finger almost off. The fight ended, however, in favor of Mitchell who left White badly wounded on the road. When he reached home, he had second thoughts and sent neighbors back to check on him. They brought him back and nursed him back to health. Old Doc Lambert supposedly amutated Mitchell's finger with a pocket knife, but days later, the two men met again, shook hands, and lived the rest of their lives as neighbors and friends. This is the story that Mitchell used to explain to his grandchildren how he had lost his forefinger..."
